Why Moses Lake Has a Serious Mosquito Problem

Moses Lake’s mosquito history is largely a product of Columbia River irrigation water introduced into the Columbia Basin in the mid-to-late 1950s. That infrastructure created extensive areas of standing and slow-moving water that became ideal breeding habitat, and the conditions it established have persisted ever since. Wetlands, irrigation canals, and agricultural land surrounding the lake expand that habitat well beyond the shoreline itself.

On individual properties, the breeding sites get smaller but no less productive. Irrigation overspray, boat covers, dock structures, clogged gutters, and low-lying lawn areas can all hold enough water for a mosquito population to develop. Adult mosquitoes shelter in overgrown vegetation and tall grass during the heat of the day, so properties with dense landscaping or unmanaged lawn areas tend to harbor larger resting populations.

Two species account for most of the mosquito activity in this region:

• Culex pipiens (Northern house mosquito): The most common backyard mosquito in the area, most active around dusk and into the evening, and a known disease vector.
• Culex tarsalis (Western Encephalitis mosquito): Found throughout Central Washington and associated with western equine encephalitis transmission in this region.

Mosquito-Borne Disease Risk in Grant County

The World Health Organization identifies mosquitoes as the deadliest animals on earth, responsible for more human illness than any other creature. In Washington state, the relevant disease concerns are West Nile virus, western equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis.

West Nile virus isn’t a theoretical risk for the Moses Lake area. In late August 2025, Grant County Mosquito Control District No. 1 detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected near Crab Creek north of Moses Lake, with the positive result confirmed at Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on September 3, 2025. Most people infected with West Nile virus don’t develop serious symptoms, but about 1 in 150 infected individuals develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system. Reducing mosquito-borne disease exposure on your property matters most during the weeks when local mosquitoes are most active.
