The Key To Effective German Cockroach Control In Yakima County

How well do you know German cockroaches? Are you aware that German cockroaches don't just live in Germany, but that they can be found all over the world—as well as right here in Yakima County? Do you know that German cockroaches didn't actually come from Germany? Experts believe that these roaches were brought to America from Africa some 300 years ago. While these are interesting facts, they're not going to help you all that much with keeping these not-so-German cockroaches out of your Yakima County home. Let's take a look at a few facts that could.

German Cockroaches Are The Worst

According to the Smithsonian, there are 4,500 species of cockroaches in the world. Out of all those cockroach species, the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), is the most common structure-infesting cockroach. That means they're the worst of the worst. If you see these little, tan roaches in your Yakima County home, know that you're going to have a hard time getting them to leave.

German Cockroaches Need Moisture

If you want to get German cockroaches out of your home, one of the most effective ways to do it is to eliminate all sources of moisture. This isn't a guaranteed solution, but in some cases, it can get the job done. Plus, it's all natural. The idea behind this strategy is that German cockroaches can only go a week without water. Consider these tips:

  • Utilize the fan in your bathroom. This vents moisture out when you take a shower or bath, and it can prevent droplets of condensation on mirrors and walls.
  • Fix leaky faucets, pipes, and other plumbing issues.
  • Install dehumidifiers, fans, or ventilation in areas of your home that are humid.
  • Protect your food. German cockroaches can derive moisture from the foods they eat.

German Cockroaches Are Tough

Yakima County residents attack these roaches with lots of products, homemade concoctions, and strategies. Unfortunately, these things have little success. German cockroaches are surprisingly tough.

  • German cockroaches can survive high levels of radiation and chemicals.
  • When German cockroaches survive contact with chemicals, they can develop new cuticles (skins) to protect them from future exposure.
  • German cockroaches pass on chemical resistances to their offspring.
  • German cockroaches have behavior patterns that help them work together to avoid danger.

We recommend having a licensed pest management professional eliminate any cockroaches that have gotten into your home.

German Cockroaches Are Small

A nymph from this species is able to slip through the holes of an electrical outlet. You must keep this in mind if you're trying to exclude them from your home. You need to do more than seal the holes in your exterior. You need to alter the habitat around your home to make it less inviting to these roaches. One way you can do this is by reducing exterior moisture.

  • Clean your gutters and make repairs to your gutter system.
  • Fix any plumbing leaks, hose leaks, leaky sprinklers, etc.
  • Water your vegetation in the morning.
  • Blow the leaves out of your landscaping.
  • Pluck the weeds in your landscaping.
  • Trim bushes, shrubs, and other vegetation to let the air flow through.
  • Trim tree canopy in areas that are densely shaded.

German Cockroaches Are Attracted To Rotting Organic Matter And Feces

If it is stinky, you can bet German cockroaches will be drawn to it. One of the most effective ways to get control of these roaches is to remove the smells that attract them.

  • Keep your bagged trash in covered receptacles.
  • Remove trash weekly.
  • Clean trash receptacles if they start to smell.
  • Keep your recyclables clean.
  • Store fertilizer away from your exterior walls.
  • If you have a dog, make sure to pick up your dog's droppings from the yard.
